Promenade Wellington is many things to many people.  As both a place to socialize and a space to earn a living, it forms the economic centre of the borough of Verdun.  In the last two centuries, it has been one of the busiest and liveliest streets on the island, drawing people in with its attractive shop windows and the enchantment of its bright signs.  However, the businesses that have set up shop there have had to endure numerous hurdles over the years: the Great Depression of the 1930’s, an increase in lease rates for shopkeepers, unemployment, etc.  As many still remember, the most recent cataclysm remains the opening of Carrefour Angrignon, which forced the migration or bankruptcy of many businesses which had made the Promenade a place where everyone could find what they needed, and more.

Yet, in recent years, the street has experienced a revival, like a phoenix rising from its ashes.  Likely as a result of the concerted effort of the SDC and the borough administration, many new businesses have chosen the Promenade as a place to offer a variety of products which distinguish themselves as those found in traditional neighbourhood shops: fine foods, tea rooms, trendy cafés, gourmet restaurants, etc.

Created in August 1997, the Société de développement commercial Wellington (Wellington Commercial Development Society) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Wellington Street’s commercial development, thereby contributing to Verdun’s economic strength and vitality.  Located at the core of the city of Verdun, Promenade Wellington extends from Lasalle Boulevard in the East to 6th Avenue in the West.  Our mission is to support the growth of the two hundred and fifty shopkeepers, retailers and business owners on Wellington Street.

Our objectives are to:

1. Promote Promenade Wellington’s commercial development
2. Represent its members and defend their interests
3. Provide our members with training and information
4. Showcase the street’s special assets and distinctive features
5. Improve the area’s quality of life and esthetic appearance

We also organize many commercial projects of a sociocultural nature which add to the street’s vitality.

Our short-term goal is to improve the street’s visibility and increase its’ patronage, while improving customer service as well as the appearance of its businesses, so that Promenade Wellington may, in the future, achieve a reputation built on its multicultural character, warm atmosphere and attractive shops.
